Established in 1835, the City of Lawrenceville embodies southeastern Illinois’ rich heritage and promising future. Nestled within a strategic ten-state region, Lawrenceville’s connectivity via major highways and its airport facilitates seamless movement of goods and people. With a focus on education, healthcare, and economic growth, Lawrenceville offers a vibrant community where history meets progress, inviting residents and businesses to join its thriving legacy.

During World War II, in 1942, Lawrence County, Illinois became a crucial site for pilot training, with Allison Prairie selected for its varied flying conditions. George Field was officially designated on August 10, 1942, named in honor of the late General Harold H. George. The field transitioned from an Army Air Corps Pilot School to the 805th Troop Carrier Command by August 1944, and after the war, it was leased to local farmers until Lawrenceville acquired it in 1948, transforming it into the Lawrenceville Municipal Airport.

In 1964, negotiations led to the creation of the Bi-State Authority, overseeing the Lawrenceville-Vincennes Municipal Airport, later renamed the Mid-American Air Center in 1980. Today, the airport serves as an industrial park, with three industries operating on-site. While commuter services are no longer available, the airport remains active, hosting events and serving as a training area for the Mid-American Pilot Association.

On April 7th and 8th, we are excited to announce our co-hosted event with the Mid-American Air Center, “Dancing in the Dark.” Join us for an unforgettable evening of the Total Eclipse, music, dance, and community spirit at the Lawrenceville Municipal Airport. Mark your calendars for this special occasion, where we’ll celebrate the rich history and vibrant future of our beloved airport. See you there!
